The Tale of Afare the Fisherman

by Brian Smaller

"When the People, guided by the wisdom of Kemlar, first came to this land, the sea beyond the good land was empty. In this time there lived a "not-man" named Afare. His tribe was small and their range was constantly attacked by other tribes of the People who had the greater numbers. The tribe saw dark times ahead, and the wise ones of the tribe knew that their small range would not long support them."

"Afare daily sailed his small carrugh out into the sea to catch the fish that helped feed his clan. One day while fishing, he felt a great tug on his line. Out of the water a great head appeared. The head was that of a great fish called Nolg, who demanded to know what right Afare had to take the fish of his range. Afare, although a "not-man", was not without courage and stood before the great Nolg and said that Kemlar himself had given the People this right. Nolg laughed at Afare and told him to flee back to the land. Afare became enraged at this and took up his axe and struck Nolg a fearsome blow. Nolg recoiled and for a complete passage of Yael did they fight. Finally, although exhausted, Afare climbed onto the back of the great Nolg and with many furious blows did he kill Nolg. The blows of his axe hewed the back of Nolg and when the great fish sank back into the sea in death, parts of his wounded back remained above the surfacer."

"Kemlar appeared to Afare and said "behold you are a great warrior, you are a man of the People". Kemlar gestured and from the where the wounded back of Nolg emerged from the waters there sprung forth plants and trees. Afare returned to the tribe and told them of this. The tribe knew the truth of his words, and they sailed to the new lands that were theirs. In their gratitude they named the islands Afarezirs, "the fish of Afare" and took the name Nolgind as their clan name, to honour the memory of the man, Afare."
