PRALORI CHARACTER GENERATION

GENERAL COMMENTS

In general, Pralori make better NPCs than PCs, because of their firm devotion to the herd. This makes it unlikely that they would 'adventure' away from their people in strange lands. One exception to this would be an all-Pralori party sent on a specific mission, but for a more typical campaign a Pralori PC would have to come up with some reason as to why he or she has left the herd. In the short term, a new shaman (i.e. not the most senior in the herd) or better yet, an assistant shaman, may often receive visions or advice from spirits confirming that he (shaman) or she (assistant shaman) may have to leave the herd to carry out some specific task related to the herd's future wellbeing. While in most cases, they would be accompanied by other Pralori, it is not uncommon for the pilgrimage to be a solitary one, and that might, on occaision, require the shaman to team up with outsiders for a time.

However, the primary example of a Pralori PC is going to be one who has been expelled from the herd for some wrongdoing. In the case of really extreme crimes (murder, rape, assaulting a shaman etc.) the culprit is commonly executed to appease the spirits. But in lesser cases, expulsion from the herd may result; this is seen as almost as severe as death. In fact, a victim of execution is ritually expelled from the herd before the sentence is carried out so the only difference between the sentences is the relatively minor one (from the Pralori's point of view) that the victim is still alive in the case of lesser crimes.

Assuming the GM does not wish to have a really despicable ex-Pralori PC, there are still a number of crimes considered extreme enough to warrant banishment by the Pralori that are not necessarily thought of as evil by other cultures. Having sex with someone to whom you are not married is perhaps the most obvious example of this, but such things as cowardice in the face of the enemy are also appropriate (assuming you don't mind a cowardly PC...) or even excessive friendliness with outsiders. There are also various taboos that might be broken, or a PC might voluntarily leave a herd because of something a feeling of guilt or unworthiness, for example because he or she has gazed upon a naked member of the opposite sex. In this latter case, the PC might not even have to face the cult spirit of retribution, as they will if they are formally expelled from the herd.
